Robin Good and his not so merry men

The latest Veggie Tale DVD has arrived in the shop and it stars Robin Good and his merry men (or not so merry men). This latest VeggieTales DVD based on a familiar tale which aims to show children how to deal with hurt and forgiveness. There's No Hurt Too Big For God! Robin Good has a mission - fundraising from the rich and giving to the poor! But when a greedy Prince starts stealing the townspeople's hams, donations are down and Robin's band of friends desert him to give robbing a try. Can Robin overcome his hurt, show his friends what's right and restore the townspeople's hope?

The episode, based on Psalm 55:22 which says, "Give your burdens to the Lord for He will take care of you," also includes the animated short, "Lenny & the Lost Birthday," which further helps teach lessons about handling hurt and forgiveness.

Taming the Tiger Chinese Version

Now I have to admit that the only words that I can understand in this book are 'Taming the Tiger', Tony Anthony, and Angela Little. Tony's brilliant and challenging book has been published in Chinese at the amazing price of £5.99. This makes it a great evangelistic book to be able to give away to anyone who can read the language.

John Stott explores ...

John Stott's ministry had a worldwide impact. He spoke and ministered in a number of countries but in particular it was his teaching ministry that he is best known for. He had a very clear and concise way of opening up the text. This ministry has now become available in a number of CD box sets that we have in the shop. They all retail at £14.99. Here are a few of the titles:

God's Gospel in a Time of Crisis - 2 Timothy (Speaking on 2 Timothy, Rev. Dr. John Stott demonstrates that Paul’s letter shows us much about the passion and urgency in his writing. He expounds that this letter demonstrates that God will call into his service those who at first do not appear equipped, a challenge and encouragement to all Christians struggling with a calling today.)

The Calling of the Church of God - 1 Corinthians (Corinthians gives possibly the clearest insight of any epistle into the life of the first century church, its moral and theological problems. In it, the Apostle Paul provides solutions to these issues in the form of authoritive instructions. Through these 4 talks, Rev. Dr. John Stott shows how important these instructions are for today’s church.)

The Privileges of the Justified - Romans 5 to 8 (Romans chapters 5-8 are among the most glorious chapters of the New Testament. Join John as he unpacks the fruits of justification, our rich inheritance as followers of Christ, fruits that will focus our lives on Holiness and on Heaven.)

Calling Christian Leaders - Corinthian Studies in Gospel, Church & Ministry (Rev. Dr. Stott tackles what wisdom the first letter to the Corinthians offers on leadership in this wonderfully instructive study.)

The Incomarable Christ (In 1974 the Rev. Dr John Stott founded the London Lectures in Contemporary Christianity.)

Twenty six years later, he joined the list of distinguished speakers who have delivered the lectures

Olympic Torch

Looking at the publication of the route that the Olympic Torch will be taking it seems that it will be passing by the shop in Windsor Street on its journey on July 24th. It should make for an interesting sight. It reminds me of when Graham Kendrick did a walk around the country back in the 1980's. I think it was linked to the 'Let the Flame Burn Brighter' theme. Graham prayer walked from town to town with other christians and they were accompanied by a man carrying something similar to an Olympic Torch. As they walked into Uxbridge they briefly called into the shop and I was very relieved that the man carrying the flame stayed outside. Ahhh memories

Thinking. Loving. Doing

Rick Warren, R. C. Sproul, Al Mohler, Thabiti Anyabwile, Francis Chan and John Piper challenge us to pursue holistic Christianity. They want us to be thinkers, very engaged and serious thinkers, and more. To be feelers, with a great passion for Jesus and his gospel, and more. And doers, endeavouring to do great acts of love for others, and more.

Our Saviour perfectly embodies all three, and demonstrates that thinking, loving and doing are indeed not at odds, but mutually strengthening and reinforcing.

REAP Journal

I really like these new journals. Called 'REAP' there are three different ones covering Adult, Youth and Kids. For a substantial book it retails at just £5.99. Amazing.

The journal has a sections of a Table of Contents, A Daily Workout, Prayer List, Bible Reading Programme and then the bulk of the book of Daily Pages. To make the best of this journal the suggestion is to use the Bible Reading Programme and read one of the passages and then journal your thoughts based on a suggested structure - REAP.

R - Read your Bible

E - Explore

A - Apply

P - Pray

We Don't Do God

When Labour was in power they were questioned about their attitude to faith. The famous reply by Alistair Campbell was 'We don't do God'. This is the title that the former Archbishop of Canterbury, George Carey, has used for what could be a very key book for our times. The book tackles the role and position of Christianity in the UK today, and the picture that he unveils is one that should cause many of us to stop and think.

Here is the description from the cover. Secular assumptions are being introduced piecemeal into our way of life. From the Millennium Dome (what exactly was it celebrating?) to the restrictions on the wearing of crosses and abolition of nativity plays, Christianity is being marginalised. Christian social initiatives at local levels are now so severely restricted that several Christian bodies issue guidelines on handling local council prejudice. There is a widespread if ill-defined sense that a valuable heritage is slipping away. Yet the Bible and Prayer Book are seminal for our language and literature; Christian social action predated the modern welfare state; our laws are based on Christian ethical systems. Christians should push back, re-engaging with politicians and opinion formers. Christians must be salt and light. Introverted Christianity must give way to engagement with the world, not defensively but with confidence and hope. It is time for a proper debate about the place of faith in modern Britain.

A Good Home for Your Old Books

We have had a couple of customers recently who have given us some boxes of Christian books that they no longer need. These are always greatly appreciated at the shop because we are in the business of recycling. We always have a couple of boxes of secondhand books at Maranatha at really bargain prices and students at our other shop at the London School of Theology are always really appreciative of the secondhand theology and counselling books because money is always tight.

So why not have a look on your shelves and if you think that you have any books that would be suitable then we would love to have them.

Heaven is For Real

This book by Todd Burpo is certainly selling at a very steady pace and will probable be in our bestseller list next month. Called 'Heaven Is for Real' it is the true story of the four-year old son of a small town Nebraska pastor who, during emergency surgery, slips from consciousness and enters heaven. He survives and begins talking about being able to look down and see the doctor operating and his dad praying in the waiting room. The family didn’t know what to believe but soon the evidence was clear. Colton said he met his miscarried sister, whom no one had told him about, and his great grandfather who died 30 years before Colton was born, then shared impossible-toknow details about each. He describes the horse that only Jesus could ride, about how “reaaally big” God and his chair are, and how the Holy Spirit “shoots down power” from heaven to help us.

Do I Have to be Good All the Time (and other awkward questions)

Here's an interesting book by Vicky Walker about facing all that Life throws at you. This is a very honest, down to earth book filled with her own mistakes along the way as well as blessings. It's very readable and draws you in to the book through her own brand of humour.

There are some deep, profound, life-defining questions we may all have pondered at some time…

Is there only one way to live?

Will anyone mind if I don’t resist temptation?

If I find someone attractive is it OK to steal a mobile

phone to get their attention?

Is there anything in life worth sacrificing everything for?

At what point on a first date is it acceptable to start planning the wedding?

What is grace and should I get some?

Do I Have To Be Good All The Time? attempts to make sense of these tricky topics and more. Vicky Walker explores life, love, pride, control, romance, relationships and why it probably isn’t a good idea to start a fi ght with a man with ‘Cut Here’ tattooed around his neck. This book cunningly provides the perfect opportunity to sit back and laugh at someone else’s mistakes while pretending to contemplate life’s big questions.
